FDA Issues Safety Warning for Faulty IVC Filters

Between 2005 and 2010 the FDA reported receiving 921 claims of adverse events regarding Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filters. The FDA issued a safety warning in May 2014 advocating the ideal time window for device retrieval is between 29 and 54 days after implementation. However, retrieving and removing devices has also proven to be problematic.

If you experienced complications after having an IVC filter implanted, you may be entitled to compensation.

What is an IVC Filter?

Parts of the filter can break off, travel in the bloodstream

This can severely damage the heart or lungs.

The filter may become clogged with clots

Which could block the flow of blood from the lower body into the heart.

The filter could move, migrate, or change position

Then the filter will become stuck in a place where it is not designed to be. This could cause it to become ineffective, or cause damage to internal organs.

Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filters, devices used in the prevention of pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs), may cause dangerous, life-threatening complications. If you had a temporary or permanent IVC filter implanted and suffered from health problems, you could be entitled to compensation.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received over 1,600 adverse event reports associated with IVC filters. According to the FDA, IVC filter complications may include device migration, filter fracture, tilting within the inferior vena cava, movement of the filter or fracture fragments to the heart or lungs, and perforation of the inferior vena cava vein. Additionally, IVC filters that are meant to be retrievable can become embedded in the vein and may be difficult or even impossible to remove.
